Investment in visual and performing arts creates vibrant and healthy communities.
First published in On-The-Town, April 2006 edition.
What creates a vibrant, healthy community where families and individuals settle and make their homes? Recent studies have shown that investment in cultural components such as visual and performing arts is key. Richard Florida, in his book, Rise of the Creative Class, as well as research conducted by the Washington, D.C. Urban Institute report we must lure and retain creative workers from all realms, from the sciences to the arts, if our communities are to flourish economically. National Governor’s Association Director Phil Psilos said, “Culture is the key to economic development now. Look at any trend analysis and data. Investment follows human capital. And human capital, to a surprising extent, follows the arts.”
In Grand Rapids, we are fortunate to live in a city that is investing more in the arts. This is witnessed by a growing number of art-based institutions, organizations, and galleries. The health of these cultural venues has a direct effect on the social and economic well-being of our community. These organizations give the city a vibrant identity, offer vital, creative stimulus for our population, and connect people, allowing us to bridge social and political issues and concerns.
As individuals, we each have the opportunity to play a valuable role in shaping the vitality of the arts and culture in Grand Rapids. A good place to start is at home. Living with original art motivates and inspires. It personalizes our living spaces with texture, color, and meaning. It provides fertile ground for broad-minded thinking and creativity. We can support our local arts organizations, galleries, and artists through participation. Attending performances and exhibits enriches our lives, nurtures imagination, creativity, and cultural appreciation and helps us connect with people. At art openings and events we have an opportunity to meet gallery owners, get to know artists, and purchase or commission an original piece of art for our home.
Think about buying locally. Not only does this connect us to our community, it is an investment in our community, which will ultimately benefit us all.
