Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts
Where Art Happens
Founded in 1977, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) is Michigan’s largest contemporary arts center and a dynamic, multidisciplinary laboratory for the advancement of the art of our time.
UICA actively challenges both artists and audiences to new levels of dialogue, creative pursuit, reflection, and illumination through: groundbreaking visual arts exhibitions, thought-provoking performances and presentations, studio programs for local artists, cutting edge films, and educational and expressive arts programs for youth and adults. UICA was recently recognized nationally as “one of the top arts- and humanities-based programs serving youth beyond school hours.”
UICA’s 25,000 square foot space currently houses five galleries, a 165-seat theatre, performing and visual arts studios, a community darkroom, and a community ceramics studio. In Fall 2010, UICA will move to a new home on the highly visible southwest corner of Division and Fulton. The larger, LEED-certified facility will allow UICA to present an even more dynamic array of contemporary art, new media, and experimental programs. Offering an international artist-in-residency program, a rooftop, outdoor space for sculpture and events, and innovative performances in a fully equipped black-box theatre.
